Description
A traditional Moroccan handmade bellows, known locally as a rabouz (or raboz/rabooz in Darija). It’s an authentic Moroccan handicraft, a traditional decorative tool used to blow air into a fire, making it burn faster and hotter.
Detailed description:
- Material — Solid wood (often cedar or other hardwood), genuine leather (sometimes camel leather or leather effect), and brass/copper parts such as the spout (mouthpiece) and decorative rivets/ornaments. The rivets hold the leather in place and provide a beautiful handcrafted detail.
- Design — Often featuring traditional Berber/Amazigh motifs, engraved metal, or simple yet elegant shapes. The leather “bellows” (the expandable part) ensures airflow.
- Use — Originally to stoke fires in fireplaces, fire pits, barbecues, or traditional pizza ovens. Nowadays primarily decorative, as antique or vintage pieces are fragile and serve purely as eye-catchers (as you indicate: non-functional for decoration).
- Age — Many sold items are vintage or antique (19th-century to early 20th-century), or contemporary reproductions in a traditional style by artisans.
